CITY ATTORNEY ROCKY DELGADILLO, ATTORNEY GENERAL BROWN SECURE $1,790,000 SETTLEMENT WITH TOY MANUFACTURERS OVER LEAD IN TOYS
LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, the city’s chief prosecutor, today announced his office, in conjunction with California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr., has reached a $1,790,000 settlement with Mattel and several other toy makers over allegations of lead in toys – a violation of California’s Proposition 65.
“Scientists have determined that there is no safe level of lead. It is toxic in even the smallest amount. So we must do everything we can to keep this toxic substance away from our kids,“ said City Attorney Delgadillo. “We’re pleased that these toy manufacturers have agreed to take the steps necessary to ensure the safety of their products.”
Under the terms of the settlement, Mattel and its subsidiary Fisher-Price, RC2, A&A Global Industries, Cranium Inc., Eveready Battery Company, Marvel Entertainment, Toy Investments, Kids II and Amscam have agreed to a $1,790,000 settlement, including a $548,500 civil penalty and $551,727 to establish a Toy Testing and Outreach Fund. This fund will aid in the monitoring of the companies’ compliance with limitations on lead in children’s products in California and identifying and implementing outreach measures involving recalls of children’s products.
